How to Decorate Your Home with Bright Colors
If you’re in the process of redecorating your home or feel like some of the rooms in your home need a little more excitement, consider incorporating some bright colors and a painted dresser! A lot of people think that interior design needs to be sleek, cautious, and dull in order to portray a certain feeling or look. That’s just not true. Bright colors don’t have to be cheesy. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Bright colors can be classy and engaging. Using bright colors on a painted dresser is a great way to add an accent and transform any room of the house.
Although bright colors can bring a room alive and add an air of excitement to your home, we don’t recommend chaotic transformation. Instead, use bright colors strategically and you’ll immediately notice a difference in how a room feels and what kind of emotion or energy it stirs up. To help you, here’s a general guide on how to decorate your home with bright colors.
60/30/10 Rule
First, you need to look at the room as a whole. Do you have a color scheme that’s already in place? If so, what is it? Take a minute to define your current color scheme and then do some research on complementary bright colors. If you’re using a dull gray scheme, look at what goes best with your tones. There are so many ways to incorporate bright colors with accent pieces, furniture, or even changing the paint on one wall. If you want to create a strong balance, use the 60/30/10 rule for adding bright colors, such as on a painted dresser.
- One color of your room should make up about 60% of the room. In most instances, this is the color of the walls and any complementary pieces like pillows, rugs, or accessories.
- Another color should incorporate 30% of your décor. This could be through the use of colored window treatments, an accent wall, or the primary pieces of furniture.
- Finally, use that last 10% and fill it with a bright color that pairs well with your color scheme. We recommend doing this by adding a few beautiful accents such as refurbished furniture, throw pillows, or even paintings. Coordinate the colors with your accents and your room will come together before your eyes.
Black as a Foundation
If you’d prefer to use more bright colors, consider creating a black balance. This means that your primary color will be black so that all of the other bright colors you incorporate have a strong contrast that will be even more appealing to the eye. When you choose your bright colors to use with a black balance, make sure to keep them in a color scheme of sorts or you’ll run the risk of a chaotic feel.
Create a Mood
Next, consider using bright colors according to the type of room that you’re decorating. Each color has a direct influence on your psyche, whether you realize it or not. Use that to your advantage. Blues, grays, and greens are known to producing a calming effect; purple influences creativity; and reds are energizing and exciting. If you get stuck, turn to nature for some inspiration. Nature gives us great insight to color palettes that we might not have otherwise considered. There are tons of ways to incorporate bright colors into natural tones to avoid going overboard but still bring benefit from a little change of scenery.
Work with What You Have
If you don’t want to completely re-do a room, don’t worry. There are easier, more cost-effective ways to incorporate bright colors into your home. The best way to do this is to work with what you have. Take a look at your room and figure out your color scheme then go shopping for a bright colored accent, such as a painted dresser, that will work with your current colors. You don’t need to re-paint or buy new window treatments to decorate your home with bright colors. Keep your palette in mind, work with the contrast that’s already established, and find your favorite new accent to help transform the room.
